This is the image I think we all have of agriculture: gently undulating
fields of a mosaic of rich, dark fertile soil swathed in green cereal crops
with grazing animals nearby. It is a green, warm, food image that we find
reassuring and supportive. This landcover is focused on us. Its structure
and function have been organised to feed and clothe humans even though most
of those who will benefit live far away in crowded cities and have never
even seen the stars let alone farmland such as this.
