An empty but enticing landscape. It is also a landscape that is rich in
plant and animal species, scenically beautiful, and relatively pristine,
being little altered by humans. But it is not sufficiently remote (or safe)
to earn the title of Wilderness.
As a society, it is a place that we want to conserve. It is a place that
we attempt to have and to hold. Can we do both? Can we do either of these
things?
