South Cape

1982 - 1991

The first case study is from Tasmania, from an area to the West of Hobart. Because of the difficulty of obtaining cloud free views of Tasmania the looking back time is restricted to just 9 years; from 1982 to 1991. Within the three FCC images, very distinctive patches of forest harvesting (by clear felling?) and of forest regrowth can be detected. The unusual and irregular shapes (presumably following the topographic constraints of the land) are characteristic.

Changes in landcover in the Huon River - South Cape area of Tasmania. The changes in the native eucalypt forests of this area over the period 5/01/82 to 17/01/91 are the result of landuse. The very distinctive patches of forest harvesting (by clear felling ?) and of forest regrowth can be detected in all three FCC images by their irregular shapes with connecting roads. What would you estimate is the proportion of the forest landcover that has been logged between these two dates?
