The sixth site was puzzling. The Difference FCC image indicates a regular area of red tones - the landcover has lost greenness between 1974 and 1988. It is a small area within the jarrah forests of the Darling Range near the headwaters of the Helena River Reservoir. Ground photography reveals a tremendous amount of surface activity: trees have been felled, the timber collected and the canopy opened. Our interpretation, not checked with WA authorities, is that this is an area suffering severe 'dieback', a lethal fungal disease. The activity on the ground represents a land management agency's attempts to contain the problem.
