Site 8

The last site shows distinctive spectral and spatial patterns in all three FCC image images. The site, just north of Lake Pinjar and the Perth central business district, comprises plantation forestry. Here a landcover of exotic tree species has replaced the native vegetation, and changes in the cover of these plantations can be detected over the 14 year period. For several reasons a landcover of conifers has a different spectral signature than that of native eucalypts. Even more distinctive is the propensity of foresters to plant their trees in regular, linear patterns. Linear features are rare in natural landscapes and their presence almost always indicates the hand of humans. In our impact on our environment, we are a very square species.
