The boundaries of the landuse of extensive pastoralism (red). This extensive area is estimated to cover approximately 4 200 000 km2, or about 55% of the continent. Within this area, the landcover that is used by the pastoral industry ranges from the winter rainfall south across arid Central Australia to the summer rainfall tropical north. Large areas of Western Australia are unused on any permanent basis because they are too arid even for this landuse.
